Functional Capacity Evaluation

In order to determine how an injury (or illness) affects a person’s ability to work, a functional capacity evaluation (FCE) may be utilized.  We at Excel Rehab and Sports offer functional and vocational evaluations (FCEs) that are rooted in science and use objective standards to collect reliable information about current functional and vocational status and to estimate potential functional and vocational status.

What is a Functional Capacity Evaluation?

In this assessment, an individual’s current functional abilities with regard to a variety of activities are systematically assessed over a period of 4 to 5 hours. In addition to an interview and history, self-assessment tools, and physical testing for position tolerances, mobility, and dynamic strength are included in the evaluation.

An FCE helps to answer questions like:

  • Is it safe for a person to return to work?

  • Are there any jobs that a person is physically capable of performing?

  • Is there a safe lifting tolerance for the individual?

  • In order for the person to return to work, what accommodations can be made?

  • In terms of rehabilitation, what is the next appropriate step?

  • What are the limitations of the individual’s cardiovascular and physical endurance?

  • How does the individual tolerate standing, sitting, and walking in different positions?

Baseline FCE

An FCE can be provided to determine whether a worker is fit to return to a wide range of activities, fit to return to some duties, or unfit to return at the current stage of recovery.
