If you live in South Carolina, you might think you need to get a referral, which is true, but there are certain exceptions. So, are referrals necessary for physical therapy treatment if you’re in SC?

Yes, and no. To put it simply, you don’t need a referral from your physician to a physical therapist’s clinic if your treatment time at the clinic is completed within 30 days. If you go to a PT clinic and your treatment time spans over 30 days, then you will need to obtain a referral to continue with your care. The direct access laws in South Carolina state that patients can receive care without a referral (direct access) for 30 days. After that point, the therapist has to deem that the care is within their scope of practice or refer to a physician.
